Uthpala M Garusinghe

Research topic: Novel nanocellulose nanoparticle composites

Uthpala completed her Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering at Monash University's Sunway campus in Malaysia. In 2014, she began her PhD at Monash University, Clayton. Uthpala is working under Chief Investigator Dr Warren Batchelor on BAMI Project 3: Engineering specific barriers with coated paper. Her research contributes to Part C of the project, working on the development of nanocellulose nanoparticle composites.

 

RAJ Praveena 3X3

Praveena Raj

Research topic: Optimising process and film properties of the nanocellulose-polyelectrolyte complex.

Praveena Raj graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) in 2012 from Monash University. Her current research interest is in nanocellulose-polyelectrolyte complexes, which contributes to Part C of BAMI Project 5: Novel biopolymer applications, working under Chief Investigator Prof. Gil Garnier.

Zhiyong He

Research topic: Oil/water separation using cellulose hydrogel membranes

Zhiyong completed his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Chemical Engineering in 2013, beginning his PhD at BioPRIA in 2014. AT BAMI, Zhiyong is involved in Project 3: Engineering specific barriers with coated paper, with his research focusing on Part B and the development of a nanocellulose coating for reverse osmosis membrane. Zhiyong is working under the supervision of Project 3's Chief Investigator Dr Warren Batchelor.

Thilina Gunawardhana

Research topic: Biorefinery opportunities in a Thermomechanical Pulping Mill (TMP)

Thilina has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical & Process Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and a Masters in Biological Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. Thilina joined BioPRIA in 2015 and is pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering. He is working under the supervision of Dr Warren Batchelor and co-supervision of Assoc. Prof. Antonio Patti on BAMI Project 6 - Biorefinery opportunities in a Thermomechanical Pulping Mill (TMP).

Jinhuo Dai

Research topic: Lignin depolymerisation and its biomass application

Jinhuo Dai received his Bachelors degree in Mineral Processing in 2013, from Central South University, China. Since 2014 he has been a PhD candidate within BioPRIA. Jinhuo is working on BAMI Project 10 - Chemicals from lignin - under the supervision of Chief Investigator Dr Kei Saito.

Lionel Longe

Research topic: Synthesis of biopolymers starting from deconstructed lignin

Lionel Longe has a Masters degree in Chemistry, specialising in polymers, from the Graduate School of Biology, Chemistry & Physics of Bordeaux, France. He also has a Masters degree in Chemistry, specialising in the chemistry and physical chemistry of materials, from the University of Bordeaux. At BAMI, Lionel is working on Project 10 - Chemicals from lignin - under the supervision of Chief Investigator Dr Kei Saito.

Llyza Ellena Mendoza

Research topic: Development of novel applications for nanocellulose gels

Llyza has a Bachelor and Master of Engineering in Chemical and Materials Engineering from the University of Queensland, Australia. In 2015, Llyza has joined BioPRIA as a PhD student. Llyza is currently working on BAMI Project 5 - The development of nanocellulose gel and its potential applications under the supervision of Prof. Gil Garnier and Dr. Warren Batchelor.

 

KIBRIA Mahmud

Mahmud Kibria

Research topic: CFD modeling of biomass gasification in a fluidised bed reactor

Mahmud Kibria completed his Batchelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh in 2007. Until 2012 he worked for the Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation as an assistant engineer. Mahmud completed his Master of Science at the University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2014. In 2015, Mahmud commenced his PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Monash University, under the supervision of Prof. Sankar Bhattacharya. He is working on BAMI Project 9 - Biomass gasification and modelling for energy and chemicals.

 

   Amini Negin 

Negin Amini

Research topic: Microwave assisted pre-treatment and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass

Negin Amini completed her undergraduate double degree at RMIT University in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. The following year she obtained a Masters in Engineering Project Management from The University of Melbourne while simultaneously working in the chemical safety industry. She began her PhD at Monash University in 2014 and is working under the supervision of Dr Akshat Tanksale and Associate Prof. Victoria Haritos on the project Microwave assisted pre-treatment and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass.

   Pramod-Sripada BAMI

Pavan Pramod Sripada

Research topic: Biomass gasification and modelling for energy and chemicals

Pramod Sripada completed his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from SASTRA University in India. In 2014, he received masters degree by research in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada. He enrolled for PhD in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Sankar Bhattacharya. He works on the BAMI Project 9 - Biomass gasification for the synthesis of chemicals, with a specific focus on the CO2 utilisation in the syngas.  

  

 

 Kirubanandan-Shanmugam

Kirubanandan Shanmugam

Research topic: Cellulosic fibre non-woven materials for high performance application

Kirubanandan Shanmugam is presently a PhD student at Monash University, Australia and working on nanocellulose as barrier materials. He did his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the University of Madras in 2001 and M.Tech in Biopharmaceutical Technology at Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University, Chennai, India in 2006 and MASc (Chemical Engineering) from Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada in 2015.

 

 Anurag-Parihar

Anurag Parihar

Research topic: Conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to platform chemicals using a fluidised bed reactor

Anurag completed his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Biotechnology from SASTRA University, India in 2012. He worked as a scientist in the Biologics division of Dr. Reddy's before commencing his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2015. The principal focus of his doctoral research is on developing and optimising a thermo-catalytic process for biomass conversion to platform chemicals and quantifying the reaction kinetics (BAMI Project 8). He is working under the supervision of Professor Sankar Bhattacharya and Professor Gil Garnier.

Xue Zhang 

Research topic: Development of super hydrophobic packaging materials based on paper and other cellulosic substrates

Xue received her Bachelor and Master of Pulp and Paper Engineering from Tianjin University of Science & Technology, Tianjin, P.R. China. She joined BioPRIA in 2015 as a PhD student and currently working under the supervision of Professor Wei Shen and Dr. Warren Batchelor on BAMI Project 2 - Super-hydrophobic and super oleophilic paper for liquid and food packaging.
